The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
