A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
