The Trump Administration to Provide Half Food Stamp Funds in November

The federal government announced it would grant limited relief to countless food stamp beneficiaries as the continuing federal closure reached a unprecedented period.

Benefit Reduction Information

Amid increasing uncertainty for the approximately 42 million individuals enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the agriculture department declared it would employ reserve resources to maintain assistance, although at just 50% of the standard amount households typically receive.

Resources for the assistance formally expired on Saturday due to the federal closure, now in its 34th day with no sign of ending.

Judicial Proceedings

The announcement came in a court filing after previous refusals to release critical funding on purported legal grounds. A court had determined the leadership could not withhold program funds as a result of the shutdown.

After the judicial ruling, the executive branch announced it would be "pleased" to provide vital funding for the program.

Execution Hurdles

Authorities noted that funds could begin distribution by Wednesday, but stressed the need for more direction from the legal system on how to properly transfer funds for SNAP benefits.

  • Several authorities have warned it will take days or even longer periods to distribute funds to needy families.
  • Long queues have been observed at pantries across the United States.
  • In various locations, large venue areas were converted into help locations.

State Emergency Measures

Various local governments, like New York, Oregon, and Virginia, issued states of emergency to provide short-term resources for support. However, these sums were projected to be a small portion of the regular federal funding.

The federal expenditures for SNAP total approximately $8 billion each month across the United States.
